They announced 3 of the 6 DLC characters before the game launched.
The roster was pretty underwhelming with them bringing back a lot of low pick bottom tier characters from UMvC3. They tried to pivot about the inclusion of X-Men by trying to tell people they only played certain characters for their abilities. They kept dodging questions about non-MCU characters being in the game. Just to list a few issues/controversies that have come with this game: ''The hard truth is no matter how fun the gameplay is everything surrounding it is pretty sub par. I saw a comment on reddit that summed it up pretty well. There's no shortage of great fighting games out right now to fill the void. It's no great loss if that doesn't happen and this is what MvC has become.just another way to advertise the MCU. I would happily buy MvCI the moment a single X-Men character is announced, and I'm deliberately holding off on buying it to be part of the big sales spike that would occur. Playing those games with friends and being excited about the future of the series helped me get through some particularly rough times, too.īut MvC is the house that X-Men built, and I personally find it worth risking the future of the series to make sure Marvel gets that message. I love the series and the Saturn and Dreamcast ports are some of my best memories with videogames.
I've bought all of them from X-Men: CotA (I'm counting this since MvC has its roots in it) to UMvC3, and most of them 2-3 times if you include JP and US versions and multiple console ports.
This is the only MvC game I haven't bought as a huge longtime fan of the series. I actually like the simplification of the team mechanics, as XvSF and MvC1 are my favorites in the series, but I know that put a lot of players off as well that are looking to DBFZ for the gameplay they want. If you add the terrible art direction, music, and general cheap aesthetic of the game on top of that, it's completely unrecognizable in terms of what made Capcom's Marvel games appealing in the first place.
I would have forgiven any other issues with the game had there been a healthy representation of X-Men characters in it, and I suspect the same is true of a large number of people. Speaking for myself, it just came down to the lack of X-Men.
